In the manufacturing world of exotics and high end engineering, there is one company with a unblemished legacy and reputation for making some of the finest cars that always stood ahead of time. Mercedes stands tall amongst all competitors and has proved to the world what German Engineering is capable of. Car watchers wouldn’t have missed a marvel from this stable in the 50’s, the 190 sl.
This one was based on the GT platform and came with two options, the hard top and the soft top along with a traverse seat making room for a third passenger. Reaching top speeds of over 100 Mph, this model was well ahead of its times and never missed to turn heads. The four cylinder engine produced a whopping 105 PS rivaling some of the racing cars of those times. Most of the tech specs of this model are even found as is on today’s cars like their suspensions and axles. Surpassing 100,000 miles, some of these models can still be found on roads.
From these models, Mercedes took away key lessons like syncing the twin-choke carburetors for a smooth ride on to their next models but in terms of handling and drivability, these cars easily surpassed most of its rivals. The classic car markets are offering these models with almost all the original characteristic features that came along. Except for some additional safety measures to match up with today’s roads and rules like a tire and brakes upgrade, these cars are still available in the same glory as it was in before 50 years, thanks to the manufacturer’s careful sourcing of metal in making the car.
Being the first generation SL, these cars formed the foundation for the GT models as roadsters, with hard and soft top and as coupes with removable tops. Mercedes went on to produce over 25000 of these models along with its cousins such as the 300 SL for over 8 years before moving on to the next generation. This car is sure a legacy to own that defined a whole new breed of SL (Super Lightweight) models from the manufacturer.
