Bulldog Guide & New Owners

The decision of having a pet needs many things to be considered - making a place for your new dog to call his very own. You can have a doghouse, doggie bed, or a crate big enough to have space for water and food bowls. This is important to housebreak your English bulldog puppy as well as a place that your puppy feels safe in and sleeps in.

The doggie bed or crate is a helpful tool for house breaking your English bulldog puppy. You need to be consistent in putting your puppy in the crate whenever you go out of the house or for his sleep time. Another important step is to take your puppy out for easing himself. This is also a practice that needing consistency. Usually puppies and dogs do not soil their sleeping place but to avoid him soiling other places in the house this is an essential part of housebreaking.

Proper puppy food should be used and it should be fed four times a day for a baby bulldog below three months. Thereafter until six months, you need to feed him three times a day; from six to one year of age he is to be fed two times a day, and after he is one year old, he should be fed only once or at the most twice a day and his puppy food should be replaced by adult dog food. Make sure he has adequate amount of water to drink – this is very important. Avoid giving any soy food, as most of the bulldogs are allergic to it. You should always follow the instructions on the food pack.

All new puppies, just like human babies chew on almost anything. Once you bring your English bulldog puppies home, you also should bring some safe hygienic chewable toys for him. Make sure that the toy is not swallowing type or breakable and cause accidents. The chewable and safe toys are usually made of rawhide, rubber, wood, nylon, and mineral and you can buy them from any pet store. Chew toys soothes and helps the puppies and dogs in many ways - eases the pain of breaking in their teeth, offers entertainment, alleviates anxiety and boredom, and lastly and more importantly maintain gum and teeth hygiene.

Overheating in bulldogs is common feature and can be due to the climate, stress, excitement, or too much exercise. Overheating in bulldogs can even cause death. Although most dogs do suffer from overheating but in case of bulldogs, having a short nose makes it difficult for them to pant to remain cool. Pinched nostrils, small trachea, and an elongated soft palette are main reasons for causing difficulty in breathing for bulldogs and in addition to that, their heavy body makes it even more difficult. Always make sure there is plenty of water available, as well as some ice and lemon juice. A bulldog upon being overheated starts to bring out phlegm that can further complicate the problem. The measures you need to take are – get him out of the heat, spray lemon juice in his mouth (this will clear the phlegm), cover him with a wet towel, and calm him. You can also place him n a tub of water to bring down his temperature.
